Diane Davis, Manager of the Admissions Office at the Graduate School, has been selected as the winner of the 2007 Robert R. Cornwell Unsung Hero Award. This award is presented each year to an exemplary employee who serves the University in an often invisible role.
Diane was presented a plaque by Dr. Lynn Williford, Assistant Provost for Institutional Research and Assessment, during a ceremony Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at the Graduate Student Center. Graduate School Dean Linda Dykstra and Cheryl Thomas, Director of Admission/Enrolled Students Office, nominated Diane for the Unsung Hero Award. They each spoke at the ceremony and praised Diane’s work and commitment.
A twenty-nine year employee of the Graduate School Admissions Office, Diane was cited for her willingness to learn and update her skills, and her positive and enthusiastic method of accepting new processes and delivering that information to the campus. Twenty-nine years ago Diane developed a fondness for admissions and the desire to make sure all applicants are treated fairly and with respect. Today, she still practices the same respectful, supportive standard.
The Unsung Hero Award was established in honor of Robert R. Cornwell after his death in 1994. Mr. Cornwell had served the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for over twenty years as Associate University Registrar and as Research Associate in the Office of Institutional Research. He loved what he did. Bob also avoided the limelight, preferring to work unnoticed in the background. His greatest satisfaction was a job well-done.
The ceremony was attended by many of Diane’s current and previous colleagues from the Graduate School Admissions Office and representatives from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. Bob’s widow, Mrs. Joy Cornwell, was a special guest at the ceremony.
